Starting the School Year off Strong: Beginning Your High School Search

The start of a school year brings new classes, new teachers, and the chance to make new friends. It’s a busy time of the year for everyone, but families of middle school students have one more important task: it’s time to start your high school search! Deciding which high school to attend is a big decision that shouldn’t be rushed. Most high schools begin enrollment activities in the early fall.

So how do you start your high school search?

Make a list. Before you get started, it can be helpful to sit down as a family and develop your own unique criteria for evaluating each school. A lot of information will be coming your way during the next few months, so it is useful to understand what is most important to your family.

Head to their website. Once you have an idea of the high schools you are interested in, head to their website for more information. Checking out their social media accounts can also be a fun and informative way to get a peek inside the day to day activities in the school. Also, be sure to write down any important dates and information, such as application deadlines and criteria.

Important days to look for. Most schools offer opportunities for prospective students and families to visit their campus and meet with faculty and staff members. Take them up on the offer! Look for chances to:
Schedule a Shadow Day: This allows students to experience an academic school day, where they enjoy a campus tour, classroom visits, hearing from our students, and seeing first-hand the value and power of an all-female education based in the Franciscan tradition.
Register for Open house: Open houses provide information about the school as well as the chance for families to visit the campus and meet with faculty, staff, and coaches. They also include testimonials from students, parents and alumni, which are often insightful.
Attend special program days: See if the school offers any further informational days on specific programs or field of study. The Catholic High School of Baltimore offers a “STEAM” Day which allows middle school students to participate in workshops in the areas of STEM, Biomedical Science, Dance, and the Visual and Performing Arts. It’s a great opportunity for students to experience these programs first-hand and see if they might be the right fit for them.

Finding the right high school is an exciting step toward the future. Start the process now and ensure you have the time to fully evaluate all your choices and make the right decision for your family!
