"Catholic High graduate Megan Lynch is a natural leader at the all-girls school who excels in computer science" says the Catholic Review. This comment couldn't be any more true! Megan has been an excellent student to have here at Catholic High, but we believe she will do great things for the CWIT program at UMBC.
May Crowning 2013

May Crowning is a tradition here at Catholic High. It is a Roman Catholic ritual that occurs in the month of May of every year. On this beautiful day, we welcomed back Alumnae from many different classes, as well as many parents and friends. It was exciting to see the seniors dressed in their white gowns as they processed into a full auditorium. It is also a tradition to have Miss Catholic High crown Mary. Molly McElroy '13 was chosen as Miss Catholic High this year and crowned the Blessed Mother with the assistance of the Junior Student of the Year, Courtney Lanasa, the Sophomore Student of the Year, Jessica Schultz, and the Freshman of the Year, Christina Tobin.

Alumna, Kate Grubb Clark '95, was our guest speaker who gave words of inspiration to our students and especially to our seniors. She shared a prayer that she had received from a Jesuit colleague, Fr. James Martin during advent this past year.

	WAITING AND WONDERING

Mary, you waited for an answer from the Angel, and you wondered over it when he uttered his mysterious reply.

You waited for nine months before Jesus was born. And in those times you wondered: Can this be true?
As the time of his birth neared, you wondered: Who will my Son be? How will Joseph and I care for him?

As he began his ministry you wondered: What is he doing? Why is he leaving us behind? How is he able to do the things that he does, and say the things he says?

At his crucifixion you wondered again: How can this be, Lord?

The day after his death you wondered: What has happened? What will happen? Where are you, God? In all these times, you wondered, and you waited, for answers.

On Easter Sunday the Answer came to you,in all his splendor.
And you knew. Finally. Fully.

Kate explained that "this season is a time of waiting and wondering. We have waited through the long winter for spring to arrive and the blossoming of flowers and the warm air and sun that touch our face. There were likely times you asked yourself…will it ever get here? Similarly, we are now in a time of great change, many of you personally as you reach this major milestone in life when you graduate from high school. You have waited for grades to see if you passed that test or nailed that paper. Many of you waited to hear if you got into the college you wanted to go to so badly. And even with answers to some of these questions, many questions remain… am I ready? To leave the comfort of these hallowed halls? For what is next for me in life?"

For those freshmen, sophomores and juniors she said, "you may ask if your day will ever get here…that day when you sit in this auditorium in your white cap and gown, ready to take on the world. For those of us who have experienced much of what life offers, good and bad, since our times here in this place, we have also asked ourselves many times what is purpose of all this? When faced with hardship we may ask ourselves, when will this pass? Or in times of elation, we may ask, whether this too will pass, when often we hope that it does not. What gets us through all of this, and much of the uncertainty of life, is patience and wonder. Patience to experience life as it is given to us and the wonder of the realization of God’s plan for each of us. Mary is an amazing example for us to consider throughout our lives. Throughout all her hardship and joy, she took time to listen to her heart. She had the patience to understand that God had a plan for her. She was not always able to see what that plan was, but she knew if she trusted in him, that was the best answer she could get."

Kate mentions, "I have often looked to Mary in my own life in getting through those times of questions and uncertainty. It is not easy. For those who know me, I am not a very patient person, but life has a way of teaching you to be patient. Take time to listen to your heart. Follow the guidance your heart provides you…it knows the way, just like it did for Mary. This can be painful sometimes and other times it can be exciting. Being willing to accept silence and sit in silence to reflect on the questions that life asks you. You will find as you get older this silence is a gift. When it comes time to act, ask for the guidance and grace of Mary to provide you with direction—those little signs/voices that speak to us in the silence of sleep, reflection and prayer, just as the angel Gabriel did to Mary.

Exercise patience in knowing that there is a plan for all of us, that we may not always have the answers to the questions that life asks, but that we must remain open to the process of curiosity and change, and God’s plan for our lives. Change affected Mary in so many ways through her life, in some very poignant and heart-wrenching, and others joyful and inspiring. Through it all she exhibited the grace of patience. Patience is empowering, it is recognizing that life is just as much of a journey as a destination. Don’t rush to get to the destination without understanding the lessons and grace gained from the journey. There is plenty of life to live in every day and so much wonder to behold. Take this advice from my own experience…it doesn’t all have to be figured out now. The answers to to the big and little questions in life are not always given in the time we wish, but be patient with yourself and be patient with God, as Mary was. Live in the present and be thankful for the gifts God has given you. Exercise them everyday. Let your light shine."

She concluded with saying "today in the way I began, with the final words of the prayer from Fr. Martin…

Mary, you waited and wondered, like I do. Lord, help me wait like Mary, with patient confidence.
Help me to wonder like Mary, with trust in your creative power.
Help me to wait, and wonder. In love.
Amen"

Miss Catholic High has been a time-honored tradition upheld by the faculty, administration, and students. On May 13th, Miss Catholic High was announced by last year's Miss Catholic High, Emma Dohmeier '12. Molly McElroy was chosen as Miss Catholic High because she has displayed academic excellence, responsible leadership, and Christian community service consistently over the past four years at Catholic High. Molly is a part of the Athletic Association, Ambassadors, Outdoor Adventure Club, and she is the Varsity Field Hockey Captain. She actively participates in events such as the Wine Tasting, Freshmen Welcome Parties, and Yearbook. Outside of school, she has a passion for horses and has been riding for 13 years. She is going to college to major in equine therapeutics and was asked to try out for the equestrian team. Molly is also recognized around the school as very motivated considering she started her own positive body image awareness campaign that is steadily growing. She is a very well-rounded young woman who shines academically and socially.

The Students of the Year were also chosen: the Junior Student of the Year is Courtney Lanasa, the Sophomore Student of the Year is Jessica Schultz, and the Freshman of the Year is Christina Tobin. All of these ladies were selected by the Interview Committee which is comprised of class advisors, two faculty members appointed by the Principal, President of the Student Council, Vice-President of the Student Council, and Class Executive. These ladies will assist Molly in crowning the Blessed Mother. The Prayer Service and May Crowning will be held on Friday, May 17th at 9:30am.

For her endless effort and dedication, Coach Mulligan Burns nominated Sydney Menikheim '13 to receive the 73rd Annual McCormick Unsung Heroes Award. The McCormick Unsung Hero Banquet was held on Monday, May 6th at 6:30pm at the Hunt Valley Marriott. Each public and private school in Baltimore City and County had the opportunity to nominate one female basketball player and one male football player for the award. The award recognizes unselfish team play and honors those who contribute substantially to the success of their teams without receiving acclaim.

In nominating Sydney, Basketball Coach Mulligan Burns said “Sydney was nominated for McCormick's Unsung Hero award because of her work ethic, accountability and because she put the team ahead of herself. Syd understands that being on a team is not just about an individual, it is about a group of individuals working together as one to achieve a goal.”

Sydney recognizes that being on a team is not about notoriety, it is about fulfilling your role to the best of your ability. “Sydney makes sacrifices and works hard to improve herself and her teammates every day. Syd did all of this throughout her high school career and for this I am very grateful.” Burns added.

Along with basketball, Sydney also plays soccer and softball. She will be attending UMBC in the fall as a part of the CWIT (The Center for Women In Technology) program.
